Using Portlock Leap Frog with Microsoft's pre-built Windows Server 2008 R2 VHD

Microsoft provides a 180-day evaluation of Windows Server 2008 R2 in the Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) format. Previously, this VHD could only be evaluated by using it with a Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machine. However, now with the use of Portlock Leap Frog, you can use this trial VHD for native Windows deployment with Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 machines.

The Virtual Hard Drive (VHD) trial edition of Windows Server 2008 R2 and Server Core is located at the following link:

Note: This is a 180-day trial of Windows Server 2008 R2.

Step 1:

Download and install Portlock Leap Frog to a supported client operating system.

Step 2:

Windows Server 2008 R2 trial VHDDownload and save the Windows Server 2008 R2 or Server Core .exe file from the download link above. Once the .exe file has been downloaded, open the file to install the trial VHD to the client system. Note: Please see the system requirements for the Windows Server 2008 R2 Trial VHD.

Warning: This VHD has been created with a maximum dynamic VHD size of 127 GB. If the VHD is stored on a drive that does not have at least this much free space available, the VHD will not successfully boot.

Step 3:

Start Portlock Leap Frog and select the Portlock Boot Manager utility from the Boot Manager tab. Next, select the Add button and navigate to the Windows Server 2008 R2 trial VHD that was just created. Once the VHD has been added, provide a boot entry description and select Add.

Selecting Apply will add the Windows Server 2008 R2 Trial VHD to the Windows Boot Manager.

Step 4:

To verify the Windows Boot Manager is installed and/or updated to the proper version for native VHD support, select Tools > Install Windows Boot Manager.

Step 5:

Reboot the Client OS. Upon rebooting, Windows Boot Manager displays a list of operating systems. Select Windows Server 2008 and hit Enter.

The Windows Server 2008 R2 Trial VHD will boot for the first time. To logon to the machine, use the following credentials:

  • Username: administrator
  • Password: Pass@word1
